Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) Documentations

Not everything can be preserved. The Historic American Buildings Survey and the Historic American Engineering Record document properties to exacting standards, saving information about structures even if they are demolished or substantially altered. HABS/HAER documentation is often required as mitigation for federally funded projects that damage historic resources.

The HABS/HAER collection is maintained at the Library of Congress. Documentation studies typically consist of large-format photographs and an historical narrative; ink-on-mylar drawings are sometimes included as well. All materials must meet strict archival standards.
